About Kazoku Karate

Kazoku means family

We chose the Japanese word “kazoku” (family) in our name and the kanji characters in our logo to represent our family oriented approach to teaching martial arts. At Kazoku Karate, adults, teens and children enjoy learning karate and all that it has to offer in a safe, friendly and fun environment.

Our promise to our students

Our mission statement represents the type of karate experience we strive to provide students at our martial arts center: “Through traditional karate instruction, we help students of all ages develop the skills necessary to lead a fulfilling, confident and successful life.”  During classes, tests and martial arts games our students learn as much about karate as they do about themselves. We have the same reverence for our mission statement that we do for the 1,000-year-old karate traditions and techniques we teach.

Some of the many benefits of karate

Karate is a terrific form of low-impact exercise. Practicing kata (karate forms) helps to improve coordination, strength and flexibility which helps with other sports and activities. Karate also builds confidence and self-esteem. Advancing a belt rank or mastering a kata helps students learn important “life skills” like good sportsmanship, goal setting, self-discipline and commitment. Parents of students often comment on how pleased they are to see their children using the life skills they learn in karate in other parts of their lives.Because students share a common interest and train together, karate is also a fun way to make lasting friendships.

Learn traditional techniques

Kazoku Karate exposes students to different types of traditional martial arts from Shotokan karate, Okinawan weapons to Ju Jitsu. The center focuses on the details of proper technique. In fact, students that choose to compete often place or win their division at open tournaments.

A balanced approach

Students are also taught techniques in “verbal karate” and that physical action is a last resort to problems they may encounter in everyday life. Meditation is an important element of karate that helps students focus in class and is a skill that can be applied in their daily lives, too.

Instruction focused on form and fun

Sensei (teacher) Sol Serna, owner and operator of Kazoku Karate, is a 4th-degree black belt who has been teaching karate for 20 years. Though a traditionalist and perfectionist on technique, Sensei Serna strikes a wonderful balance between discipline and making karate fun. Students respect his expertise and enjoy karate in the fun environment he creates.
